The pulp is the tooth’s “heart” and consists of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue that together fill the dental canals extending from the tooth root into the crown and back.

Causes for Root Canal Treatment

The pulp keeps the tooth alive, but severe caries or dental fillings can inflame or infect the pulp. With a root canal treatment, the inflamed pulp can be removed and replaced with a rubber material called gutta-percha. The gutta-percha keeps the canals free from contaminants and infections, allowing the tooth to be preserved instead of extracted.

Below are various causes of acute pulp inflammation, which are accompanied by swelling, internal pressure in the tooth, and pain:

  • Advanced caries
  • Deep fillings near the nerve
  • Repeated dental treatments – e.g., replacement of a large filling
  • Traumatic injuries such as cracks, chips, or bridges
  • Traumatic occlusion – repeated excessive impact on the tooth when teeth are bitten together

Does Root Canal Treatment Hurt?

A root canal treatment begins by fully opening the tooth to locate all canals. The number of canals varies from tooth to tooth; there can be 1-4 canals in a single tooth.

Once all canals have been located, they are measured electronically to ensure the root filling covers the entire canal from the root end upwards. The canals are thoroughly cleaned with files. They are then rinsed with an antiseptic solution, and finally, the canals are filled with gutta-percha.

A root canal treatment can cause pain, but the pain subsides with anesthesia, which is usually administered during the treatment. After the root canal treatment, the tooth should be fitted with a composite filling or a crown, depending on how much of the tooth has been lost.

Another method consists of two steps: cleaning and filling. If the dental inflammation also extends to the surrounding bone material, the pain is caused by both regions. In such cases, an antiseptic agent is used after canal cleaning.

This is followed by a healing period of at least one week with a temporary filling. If you are free from discomfort after this, and we can see that successful bone healing has begun, we proceed with the second step of the treatment. We conclude the root canal treatment with an individually adapted dental filling.

If you experience an acute dental problem, you can book an appointment with one of our emergency dentists in Malmö. We are open Monday-Saturday with generous opening hours.

We also specialize in helping patients who find treatments of this kind uncomfortable, and we always base our approach on your needs and your previous dental experiences.

The treatment is also always based on methodical procedures where we continuously inform you about the different steps.

If necessary, and especially in cases where it is not possible to administer anesthesia in an initial stage, we can always offer sedatives to help you relax.

We are meticulous in ensuring that the root canal treatment is performed in the best possible way and do not conclude the treatment until we have resolved the problems and any pain.

Due to this, it can sometimes be difficult to know how long it will take to complete the treatment, but regardless, we plan it with your well-being in mind. Should you continue to experience pain after the root canal treatment, we will, of course, follow up on the situation.

FAQ before booking a dental appointment

Root canal treatment

The price of a root canal treatment depends on how many canals a tooth has. Most teeth have between one and three roots, but there are also teeth with four or more roots. During a root canal treatment, all roots must be filled. After a root canal treatment, a plastic filling or a crown is placed on the tooth. It is always recommended to place a crown on a root-filled tooth to strengthen and protect it.

The cost of a root canal treatment varies between SEK 4,134 and SEK 6,816, depending on how many root canals need to be filled. A filling or crown is an additional cost. These prices are before the deduction from Försäkringskassan (the Swedish Social Insurance Agency); the size of the deduction depends on the patient’s accumulated deductible. The dentist always informs about the cost of the treatment before it begins.

Pain after a root canal treatment can occur but is usually much less intense than a typical toothache. Most people experience no pain at all after a root canal, while others may find the tooth tender. It is recommended to take painkillers for a couple of days after a root canal. The pain or tenderness usually disappears within a couple of days after the treatment. Severe pain after a root canal is very uncommon. The dentist normally informs about the conditions after the root canal treatment and provides tips and advice.
