Our experienced dentists in Malmö offer safe and professional dental care under general anesthesia for those who experience dental anxiety or require major procedures. Our dentists and anesthesiologists at TandCity ensure a safe and comfortable experience, tailored to your needs.
What is general anesthesia dentistry?
General anesthesia dentistry means that dental treatments are performed while the patient is unconscious under general anesthesia. This is often used for patients suffering from dental phobia, or those who require extensive dental procedures and find it difficult to undergo them under local anesthesia.
Why is general anesthesia needed in dentistry?
General anesthesia is used in dentistry to make treatment more comfortable for patients who would otherwise not be able to complete the procedure. It may also be necessary for individuals with special medical needs or for children who cannot sit still for an extended period.
When is general anesthesia appropriate for dental care?
Dental care under general anesthesia may be recommended in the following situations:
- Severe dental phobia
- Extensive dental needs requiring a long time in the dental chair
- Children or adults with special needs
- Patients with physical or mental disabilities
The difference between local anesthesia and general anesthesia
Local anesthesia means that only the treated area is numbed, while you remain awake throughout the procedure. General anesthesia, on the other hand, means that you are completely unconscious and unaware of what is happening during the treatment.

Treatment time varies depending on how much the teeth need to be moved, but most treatments with aligners last approximately 6 to 18 months. We provide an estimate of the time required during the initial consultation.
In practical terms, this means that:
- If your appointment is scheduled before 12:30
you must fast from 00:00 (midnight) the evening before. Up to 2 hours before your appointment, you may drink a cup of coffee without milk, tea, cordial/juice, but NO milk, yoghurt or cream, as these are considered food. The drink may be sweetened.
At the same time, please take any medications then (see below). - If your appointment is scheduled after 12:30

If you smoke/use snus, it is important that you refrain for at least 2 hours, as nicotine affects gastric emptying.
As a rule, you should take your usual medications as normal, using the above drink and time limits as a guideline. For certain specific conditions, the following applies:
- Asthma/COPD– Take your inhalation medication in the morning even if you do not currently need it—this is to prevent any potential complications during general anaesthesia.
Bring your inhalation medications with you to the procedure. - Diabetes, tablet-treated – Do NOT take your morning dose of diabetes medication; take your other tablets as usual.
You must bring your blood glucose meter and your diabetes medication to TandCity, as you will take these after the procedure.
TandCity prioritises patients with diabetes for early procedures during the day. - Diabetes, insulin-treated – Do NOT take your morning dose of insulin (applies to both long- and rapid-acting).
You must bring your blood glucose meter and your own insulin pen/or, as you will take these after the procedure.
TandCity prioritises patients with diabetes for early procedures during the day.
If you have severe dental anxiety, you will be provided with anti-anxiety medication that you must take 2 hours before your appointment.
During the Visit
Premedication & Before Anesthesia
Upon arrival, you will be provided with pain-relieving tablets to be taken just before the procedure, known as premedication. These medications, usually paracetamol (Panodil®, Alvedon®) and NSAIDs (ibuprofen, diclofenac), are given preventively against dental pain. Before anesthesia, it is important that you try to empty your bladder just before the procedure as it is significantly more difficult afterwards, primarily due to fatigue. Please use our restroom upon arrival!
Dental Care Under General Anesthesia
After you have taken your place in the dental chair, anesthesia staff will insert an IV drip via a cannula placed on the back of your hand or in the crook of your arm. A cannula is a thin plastic tube leading into the blood vessel, and it is through this that you will receive the anesthetic drugs. The staff will also connect you to the patient monitor, which monitors blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation during the procedure.
Patient safety is high during the procedure, and TandCity uses the same rigorous monitoring equipment as an operating room in a hospital.
We follow the most current scientific guidelines for anesthesia during dental procedures. The anesthetic drugs used are therefore modern and tailored to the nature and length of the procedure, as well as your needs. Anesthesia can range from light sedation, providing a relaxing and anti-anxiety effect during the procedure, to deeper general anesthesia where you sleep soundly. Please share your thoughts and needs with the anesthesia staff!
After the procedure, you will remain lying in the dental chair under supervision until you are more awake and alert. The most common side effect after anesthesia is nausea, something we do our utmost to help you avoid. Subsequently, you will take a seat in the waiting room until the anesthesiologist discharges you and you can return home.
After the Visit
At TandCity, we strive to ensure your procedure is as painless as possible. To maintain the pain-relieving effect of the premedication and the local anesthesia used by the dentist, it is recommended to have over-the-counter medications (Alvedon®, Panodil®, Ipren®, or Diclofenac) available at home for continued pain relief after the procedure. These can be purchased at any pharmacy. Follow the manufacturer’s or pharmacy’s instructions.
Good to Remember
- Avoid nail polish on all fingers; please leave the thumb and index finger on one hand clear. If you use artificial nails, the same applies. This is because our monitoring equipment cannot measure through nail polish or artificial nails.
- Avoid contact lenses and bring glasses – this is because the ability to blink is affected during anesthesia and the lenses/eyes can dry out.
- It is prohibited to drive a car or other vehicle for 24 hours after the procedure, as our anesthetic drugs are classified as narcotics and some residual effects may be present. When going home, you should be picked up by a relative/friend or take a taxi or public transport.
- Remember to arrive well-rested for the procedure.
- Bring identification.
