What is general anesthesia dentistry?

General anesthesia dentistry means that dental treatments are performed while the patient is unconscious under general anesthesia. This is often used for patients suffering from dental phobia, or those who require extensive dental procedures and find it difficult to undergo them under local anesthesia.

Why is general anesthesia needed in dentistry?

General anesthesia is used in dentistry to make treatment more comfortable for patients who would otherwise not be able to complete the procedure. It may also be necessary for individuals with special medical needs or for children who cannot sit still for an extended period.

When is general anesthesia appropriate for dental care?

Dental care under general anesthesia may be recommended in the following situations:

  • Severe dental phobia
  • Extensive dental needs requiring a long time in the dental chair
  • Children or adults with special needs
  • Patients with physical or mental disabilities

The difference between local anesthesia and general anesthesia

Local anesthesia means that only the treated area is numbed, while you remain awake throughout the procedure. General anesthesia, on the other hand, means that you are completely unconscious and unaware of what is happening during the treatment.

Preparations for general anesthesia dentistry at TandCity Malmö

Treatment time varies depending on how much the teeth need to be moved, but most treatments with aligners last approximately 6 to 18 months. We provide an estimate of the time required during the initial consultation.

Before procedures under general anaesthesia, you must be fasting for at least 6 hours and not have had anything to drink for at least 2 hours before the procedure is performed. This is because the stomach must be empty to prevent any potential complications during general anaesthesia.

In practical terms, this means that:

  • If your appointment is scheduled before 12:30
you must fast from 00:00 (midnight) the evening before. Up to 2 hours before your appointment, you may drink a cup of coffee without milk, tea, cordial/juice, but NO milk, yoghurt or cream, as these are considered food. The drink may be sweetened.
At the same time, please take any medications then (see below).
  • If your appointment is scheduled after 12:30
you should eat a light breakfast (avoid fatty foods) no later than 06:00, but must be completely fasting thereafter.
Up to 2 hours before your appointment, you may drink a cup of coffee without milk, tea, cordial/juice, but NO milk, yoghurt or cream, as these are considered solid food. The drink may be sweetened. At the same time, please take any medications then (see below).

If you smoke/use snus, it is important that you refrain for at least 2 hours, as nicotine affects gastric emptying.

As a rule, you should take your usual medications as normal, using the above drink and time limits as a guideline. For certain specific conditions, the following applies:

  • Asthma/COPDTake your inhalation medication in the morning even if you do not currently need it—this is to prevent any potential complications during general anaesthesia.
Bring your inhalation medications with you to the procedure.
  • Diabetes, tablet-treated – Do NOT take your morning dose of diabetes medication; take your other tablets as usual.
You must bring your blood glucose meter and your diabetes medication to TandCity, as you will take these after the procedure.
TandCity prioritises patients with diabetes for early procedures during the day.
  • Diabetes, insulin-treated – Do NOT take your morning dose of insulin (applies to both long- and rapid-acting).
You must bring your blood glucose meter and your own insulin pen/or, as you will take these after the procedure.
TandCity prioritises patients with diabetes for early procedures during the day.

If you have severe dental anxiety, you will be provided with anti-anxiety medication that you must take 2 hours before your appointment.

During the Visit

Good to Remember

  • Avoid nail polish on all fingers; please leave the thumb and index finger on one hand clear. If you use artificial nails, the same applies. This is because our monitoring equipment cannot measure through nail polish or artificial nails.
  • Avoid contact lenses and bring glasses – this is because the ability to blink is affected during anesthesia and the lenses/eyes can dry out.
  • It is prohibited to drive a car or other vehicle for 24 hours after the procedure, as our anesthetic drugs are classified as narcotics and some residual effects may be present. When going home, you should be picked up by a relative/friend or take a taxi or public transport.
  • Remember to arrive well-rested for the procedure.
  • Bring identification.
