About the Author: TandCity

With Tiotandvård, you only pay ten percent of the reference price for certain treatments. The remaining 90 percent is covered by the state. The aim is to enable more people to maintain good dental health later in life, without cost becoming an obstacle.

Which dental care is included?

The reform is intended to cover treatments necessary for you to eat, live, and speak without pain. This includes, among other things:

  • Measures to treat diseases of the teeth and gums.
  • Treatments that relieve pain or injuries.
  • Rehabilitative and restorative interventions needed for oral function.

Limitation to Tooth Position Five

For fixed prosthetic treatments such as crowns and bridges, the subsidy only applies up to tooth position five. This means that the large molars at the very back, i.e., tooth positions 6, 7, and the wisdom tooth 8, are not covered by Tiotandvård. This applies to both the upper and lower jaw, as well as the left and right sides. You can determine which teeth are covered by:

  1. Standing in front of a mirror and looking straight ahead.
  2. Counting from the middle. The middle tooth is number 1.
  3. The limit is reached at tooth number 5.

You will have to pay for teeth beyond this position yourself, but they are still covered by the current high-cost protection.

What is not included?

Not all dental care is covered. You pay as usual for:

  • Examinations, X-rays, and check-ups
  • Certain preventive treatments
  • Aesthetic Dentistry
  • Fixed prosthetic treatments performed further back in the mouth than tooth position five (e.g., certain crowns, bridges, and dental implants).

Financial support you can combine with

In addition to Tiotandvård, there are also grants that can reduce the cost:

  • General Dental Care Grant (ATB): SEK 600 per year. Can be saved for two years.
  • Special Dental Care Grant (STB): SEK 1000 per half-year, totaling SEK 2000 per year. Can be saved for one year. Aimed at those with certain diseases or diagnoses affecting teeth and oral health.

Why is Tiotandvård being introduced?

Many seniors currently forgo dental care because the costs can be high. This risks problems growing and leading to poorer overall health. By reducing the patient fee to ten percent, it will be easier for more people to seek care in time and avoid unnecessary suffering.
