With a root canal treatment, the inflamed pulp can be removed and replaced with a rubber material called gutta-percha. Number of canals differs from tooth to tooth; there can be 1-4 canals in a tooth. When all the canals have been located, they are measured electronically, so that the root filling covers the entire canal from the end of the root all the way up. The channels are carefully cleaned with files. Then they are flushed with an antiseptic solution and finally the canals are filled with gutta-percha. A root canal can be painful, but the pain goes away with anesthesia that is usually given in conjunction with the treatment. If the tooth inflammation also extends to the surrounding bone material, the pain is caused by both regions. An antiseptic agent is then used after the canal cleaning. After that, a healing period of at least one week with a provisional filling must follow.
